Day 90 – 100 Days Of Scouting

Today will likely hold some Scouting talk with my Bear as we head out to find her a new backpack, but it’s Mother’s Day, so there will be no other Scouting activity.

The Mom’s in Scouting are often overlooked and participate in the shadows of Scoutmasters, Cubmasters, and Den Leaders. It’s rare to find a woman Scoutmaster, but every time I do I thank them for all they do. To be the mother to their son, but also to the sons of others is a great task. Mom’s in Scouting play the most important role as they’re the ones that help with Cub Scout projects at home, drive them to meetings, and are the true organizers of any event. Stop and look at what Mom’s in Scouting do, if they wear a uniform or not. Thank them today for your children and what they do to support them. I know I will.

Happy Mother’s Day to my wife, my partner, my Bear, my friend. Thank you for our children.

Day 89 – 100 Days Of Scouting

Today was a busy day of celebrations of long hard work. My sister in-law graduated in the morning with her master’s degree in social work. After 3 long years of school while still working full time, it was great to see her reach the end. It was a great ceremony.

Second event of the day was an Eagle Scout court of honor. A friend of ours asked if I’d be the photographer for the event and I accepted without hesitation. I had done the same for this Scout’s older brother a couple of years ago. A great ceremony for a fine young man. He was recognized for his work within his Troop as well as a large amount of time in the OA. His mom runs our local Scout Shop and has served as Scoutmaster for a new Troop. It was nice to see both of her sons make it to Eagle Mountain.

That’s about it for the week.

Day 87 – 100 Days Of Scouting

The most important night of the month, it is PLC night. Boy did my Scouts not let me down. We just came off of our first complete month of the Scouts running things 100%. This next month posed some challenges to the planning process, but they worked through them perfectly. I asked a few questions to make sure they didn’t miss anything, but their ideas were all their own. They’ve taken the step of making out an agenda of talking points and also used the Monthly Meeting Plans worksheet to put down names to each activity they have planned. We had to cancel our campout due to everyone being in sports, but they came up with a great one day outdoor event to take it’s place. I’m really starting to see all of this Scouting stuff work in these boys and I couldn’t be prouder.

My wife pointed out that its been 6 months since I’ve taken over as Scoutmaster and we’re starting to see the Troop run like a Troop should. I was very proud of that fact. Magic doesn’t happen over night, but it does happen.
